RATTLESNAKE TRAINING FOR DOGS

(next group classes starting Winter 2024/25)

Pain-induced rattlesnake training can harm your dog, causing fear and panic during encounters. My rattlesnake avoidance training focuses on keeping you and your dog safe using positive reinforcement.

BENEFITS OF MY RATTLESNAKE AVOIDANCE DOG TRAINING CLASS:

  • Reward-Based Methods: Teach your dog to avoid rattlesnakes without fear.

  • Dedicated Alert Response: Train your dog to alert you to a rattlesnake’s presence, allowing you to leash them and proceed safely.

  • Flexible Class Options: Choose a 6-week private class for personalized attention or a group class for collaborative learning and advanced practice.

  • Advanced Learning: Weekly small-group classes with practice in different environments, focusing on snake sight, scent, and sound cues, with ongoing coaching and feedback.

Additional Information:

    •    Optional Online Content: Access weekly lessons online if you anticipate missing a group class session.

    •    Prerequisites: If this is your first experience with reward-based training, please inform me before booking.

Safety Disclaimer: This course does not guarantee complete protection from snake bites but equips you and your dog with skills to avoid them.

If you have questions or want to be notified about future classes, please reach out to me!

  • How do I know if we are a good fit?
I offer a free 20 min phone consult to see if we are a good fit. We discuss your needs and see how I can help you. 719-229-2314
  • What is positive reinforcement training and why is it useful?
Positive reinforcement training centers on encouraging desired behaviors by using rewards that the dog finds intrinsically rewarding—such as treats, praise, play, or any other activity or object the dog genuinely enjoys. Instead of punishing or correcting unwanted behaviors, I focus on ignoring them (extinction) and redirecting the dog’s attention toward behaviors I want to encourage. My approach considers each dog’s unique L.E.G.S.—Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self—which means understanding how these factors shape their behavior and responses. This holistic, personalized approach creates a respectful and engaging experience, strengthening the bond and trust between dog and owner as they learn and grow together.
  • Do you train my dog for me?
No, I don’t train your dog for you. My approach is rooted in helping you and your dog learn together, as it’s essential that you, as the paw-rent, feel confident handling your dog in everyday situations. My goal is to equip you with the tools, guidance, and support to strengthen your bond and manage your dog’s behavior effectively. After all, you’re the one who will be living with your dog, and I believe in setting you both up for success as a team.
  • What do I need for training?
To train your dog you most of all need a positive attitude, lots of smiles and fun. We will need treats and certain equipment, but it is all case dependent. Some dogs don't like treats but rather a pat or a game/ toy. Usually after a meeting or prior to the next one I will let you know what you need if it won't be standard available in your home.
  • What collar do you recommend? Do you use a harness?
I focus on positive, humane methods and don’t use e-collars or prong collars in my training. For most dogs, a flat collar or a well-fitted, multi-clip harness works best—especially one that allows the dog’s legs to move freely and naturally. For larger or stronger dogs, a gentle leader can be useful as a temporary tool, though our goal is to eventually transition to a flat collar as your dog becomes more comfortable on the lead. Occasionally, I may recommend specific harness styles if the one in use doesn’t fit well or restricts movement. For training walks, I suggest a flat collar and a multi-clip harness to support the cues we’ll work on together.
  • Where do training sessions take place?
I train where you and your dog are most comfortable and where real-life situations happen. This can include your home, yard, neighborhood walks, or locations with more people and distractions, depending on your goals and challenges. Each case is unique, so we tailor the training location to fit your needs. Some specialized classes, such as my Rattlesnake Avoidance training, do take place in a dedicated training area, and I may offer additional group classes in the future.
  • Do you offer group classes?
I currently offer one-on-one training sessions tailored to you and your dog’s needs, often in your home, yard, on neighborhood walks, or at locations with various distractions. At the moment, the only group class I offer is my reward-based Rattlesnake Avoidance training, but I do plan to add more group classes in the future. If you’re interested in group classes, please feel free to ask at 719-229-2314.
  • What is mental stimulation for my dog and why is it important?
Mental stimulation is essential for a dog’s well-being—and it’s also fun to watch! Just like us, dogs can become bored, frustrated, anxious, or even depressed without enough mental engagement. A mentally enriched life not only helps keep dogs sharp and can reduce symptoms of dementia, anxiety, and depression, but it can also lessen behavior-related problems that stem from boredom or stress. I’ll teach you a variety of engaging games and share creative ideas to keep your dog learning and happy every day. While routines are important, dogs also need variety—new walking paths, fresh games, and tasks that give them a sense of purpose. Providing these challenges not only makes your dog happier but also strengthens your bond along the way.
  • Do you work with aggressive dogs?
I generally don’t take on cases involving human-directed or dog-to-dog aggression. However, I encourage you to reach out, as I have a network of trusted trainers who specialize in these areas and may be able to help. In some instances, I may also take on specific cases, depending on factors like the dog’s age, history, and the nature of the aggression.
  • Are there breeds you don't train?
In addition to training all breeds, I specialize in Retriever Training, Positive Gun Dog Training, Rattlesnake Avoidance training, and Scent Work. My approach is rooted in reward-based methods tailored to bring out the best in your dog’s abilities, whether it’s honing retrieval skills, preparing for fieldwork in a positive way, or engaging in the enriching world of scent work. I also incorporate the L.E.G.S. model, considering each dog’s Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self (their unique personality), to create a training plan that respects their individuality and sets them up for success.
  • What are your pricing options for training and behavior modification?
My pricing varies depending on whether you’re seeking behavior modification or general training. Behavior modification cases require deeper involvement to understand and address the underlying reasons behind the behavior. I offer both single sessions and packages for each service to fit your needs. My main service area covers most local clients, and I also have an extended service area with an additional travel fee for time and gas. If you’re outside these areas, don’t hesitate to reach out - I offer virtual training and consultations, even for clients overseas. I’m also open to creative solutions, like meeting halfway, to make sure I can support you and your dog’s training journey.
  • Do you add travel costs to your prices, and what are your service areas?
Yes, I do apply a travel fee for clients located in my extended service area to cover time and gas costs. For clients within my main service area, travel is included in the session price, but for those in my extended service area, there’s an additional $20 fee per visit. You can check if your location falls within my main or extended service areas by clicking the link above. Even if you’re outside both areas, feel free to reach out - I offer virtual consultations and can often work out flexible solutions, like meeting halfway, to make training accessible.
  • What payment methods do you accept?
I accept all major card payments, either through my website or via convenient pay links. If you need a different payment option, just let me know, and I’ll do my best to accommodate.
  • Are you insured?
    Yes.
  • What certifications and memberships do you hold?
I am certified in canine behavior and psychology through the International Society of Animal Professionals (I.S.A.P.), and I’m also a proud member of this positive reinforcement organization. I believe in the importance of ongoing education, as dog training science is always evolving. I’m currently pursuing additional certifications to stay updated on the latest, science-backed methods and provide the best guidance for you and your dog. See here what I have and I am studying right now.
  • Do you offer any discounts?
Yes, I offer a 10% discount for active-duty military members and veterans as a thank-you for their service. Occasionally, I also provide seasonal or event-based discounts. Please note that only one discount can be applied at a time.
