K9 Nose Work® and Scent Work in general is all about letting your dog’s nose lead the way. Inspired by professional detection training but designed for companion dogs, this activity gives every dog - regardless of breed, age, or background - the opportunity to use their natural scenting abilities.

Dogs learn to problem-solve, explore, and communicate through scent while building confidence, independence, and focus. Handlers learn how to read and support their dog’s natural searching skills, creating a rewarding experience for both ends of the leash.

Whether your goal is mental enrichment, confidence building, teamwork, or preparing for Nose Work trials, K9 Nose Work® offers a fun and engaging activity for dogs of all ages and personalities.

What to Expect

• Small class sizes & 90min of learning per class

• One dog works at a time while the other dogs rest between turns

• Dogs should be comfortable resting in a crate or vehicle between searches

• Suitable for dogs of all breeds, ages, and experience levels (all class levels are offered)

• Reward-based training methods only

• Shy, sensitive, and dog-reactive dogs are welcome

• Classes follow NACSW™ training principles

• Supportive and encouraging learning environment for both dogs and handlers

Introduction to K9 Nose Work® (Beginner Class) 

Start your scent journey here.

Dogs search for food or toy rewards hidden in simple setups such as boxes, containers, and small indoor areas. This class builds motivation, focus, confidence, and the joy of hunting without handler direction. Handlers learn how to observe, trust, and support their dog’s natural searching abilities.

 

Perfect for beginners, puppies, and dogs of all ages.

Format: 6-week class

Continuing Nose Work on Primary (follow up classes after Introduction) will be offered periodically as a drop-in style

Introduction to Odor

Take the next step into the world of scent detection.

 

Dogs are introduced to target odors such as birch, anise, and clove while continuing to develop strong search skills and confidence. At the beginning odors are carefully paired with primary rewards to build clear odor recognition and understanding.

 

Handlers learn about odor theory, hide placement, reward timing, and how to better read their dog’s communication at source.

 

Prerequisite: Completion of Introduction to K9 Nose Work® or instructor approval

Format: 6-week class

Continued K9 Nose Work®

For teams ready to continue building their scent detection skills.

 

Searches become more challenging through a variety of environments, hide placements, and scent puzzles. Teams continue developing independence, problem-solving abilities, handling skills, and odor recognition while working in containers, interiors, exteriors, and vehicles.

 

This class is ideal for teams interested in advancing their skills, preparing for Nose Work trials, progressing through trial levels, and that are simply enjoying increasingly challenging searches together.

 

Prerequisite: Completion of Introduction to Odor or instructor approval

Format: Ongoing class
