Trailing - Foundations to Complexity

Trailing Starter & Progression Level

125 US dollars
TBD in - Parker, CO

Service Description

This half-day workshop integrates foundation skills with increasing trail complexity. Teams work at their individual level, progressing through more advanced scent challenges as the day unfolds. Whether you are brand new, have completed one Introduction workshop, or are ready to stretch into more demanding trails, setups are adjusted to meet you exactly where you are. There is no single “right” way to trail. Dogs are encouraged to work the full scent picture - ground scent, air scent, or both - while handlers learn to observe, interpret, and support without directing. What to Expect Each team will complete multiple trails, increasing in length, complexity, and environmental variables. Depending on readiness, trails may include: *Human out of sight *Longer distances *Turns and directional changes *Crossroads and scent pooling challenges *Environmental transitions *Increased trail age Handlers might focus on: *Long-line handling with clarity and intention *What to do (and what not to do) at crossroads *When to restart a dog and how *Reading subtle behavioral changes *Supporting the dog without influencing decisions Dogs work individually while others rest, creating a calm and focused learning environment. All trails are adjusted to the team’s experience, comfort level, and learning goals. Some teams may start to learn the game, strengthen foundations, while others move into more complex scent problems. Workshop Focus *Dog-led searching and decision-making *Understanding how scent moves through the environment *Long-line handling mechanics and body awareness *Crossroads strategy and handler neutrality *Building confidence, trust, and teamwork Certification Information Attendance for beginners counts as ½ of the basic requirement toward certification eligibility for the new Sleuth Dogs Trailing trials launched in February 2026 with Bloodhound Mantrackers. What to Bring *Your dog *A well-fitting harness *A long leash (12–15 feet minimum; longer recommended for experienced teams) *High-value treats and/or a favorite toy *Weather-appropriate gear for you and your dog *Items to keep your dog comfortable, hydrated, and temperature-regulated (water, shade, cooling gear, or warming layers as needed) Half-day Canine Trailing workshop taught collaboratively by Diane Ross (Proactive Canine Solutions) and Sandra Winfrey (dreamlike4paws)
