K9 Nose Work® is a simple, rewarding activity that taps into your dog’s natural hunting instinct. It helps build focus, confidence, and problem-solving skills while giving your dog a meaningful job to do - right at home or anywhere you go. This foundational course follows the official NACSW™ structure and emphasizes dog-driven, self-rewarding searches. Each dog works individually while others rest between runs, ensuring a calm and focused environment that supports both confident and sensitive dogs. The approach encourages independence, trust, and clear communication between dog and handler. The course begins with a virtual orientation (1 hour) followed by five in-person sessions, each about 1 hour 30 minutes long. The virtual session lays the groundwork for success; the in-person sessions provide hands-on learning, observation, and coaching. ⸻ COURSE OUTLINE Virtual Orientation (1 hour) Learn the philosophy of K9 Nose Work®, how to set up your first box searches, and how to prepare your dog and home for practice. Session 1 – First Searches Your dog begins the box game. We identify what motivates them most - food or toy - and spark their enthusiasm for searching. Session 2 – Building the Game Add more boxes and hides while learning to recognize subtle “changes of behavior” that show your dog is working scent. Session 3 – Adding Objects Include household items like chairs or bins to expand search areas. Dogs learn persistence and adaptability while exploring new surfaces and obstacles. Session 4 – Barriers & Challenges Introduce hides behind barriers or partially visible spots. This stage strengthens determination and refines leash handling and reward timing. Session 5 – Blind Hides & Celebration You won’t know where the reward is -your dog will. This builds trust and deepens your understanding of how your dog communicates scent detection. The final session reviews progress and prepares teams for Continuing Nose Work (Level 2). ⸻ HOME PRACTICE After each session, you’ll receive a short homework email. These activities reinforce skills, build consistency, and help your dog stay engaged between classes.
