Service Description

Starter & Progression Level Canine Trailing is a dog-led scent activity where dogs learn to follow the unique scent of a specific person. The work encourages confidence, independence, and strong teamwork between dog and handler. This workshop is suitable for both teams new to Trailing and teams who already have an introduction and want to continue progressing their skills. Starter teams will focus on building a clear understanding of the scent picture and developing confidence while following a trail. Progression teams will work on advancing their skills with blind starts, intersections, and increasing trail complexity, helping teams move toward more independent trailing. Dogs are encouraged to work the full scent picture — using ground scent, air scent, or both — while handlers learn how to support their dog on the long line. ⸻ SERVICE DESCRIPTION Each team will complete multiple trails during the workshop. Dogs work one at a time while the other teams observe and learn. Focus areas include: • Dog-led searching and decision-making • Understanding scent movement in the environment • Long-line handling and supporting your dog • Building confidence and teamwork • Introducing blind starts and intersections for progressing teams Trails are adjusted to each team’s experience level. Participation counts as ½ of the requirement toward certification for the Sleuth Dogs Trailing Trials, organized by Bloodhound Mantrackers. ⸻ WHAT TO BRING • Your dog • A well-fitting harness • A long line (minimum 12–15 feet) • High-value treats and/or a favorite toy • Weather-appropriate gear ⸻ FORMAT Half-day Canine Trailing workshop taught by Sandra Winfrey (dreamlike4paws) and Diane Ross (Proactive Canine Solutions).
