As a dog trainer, I often emphasize the importance of bonding with our dogs, not just through training but by creating memorable experiences.

National Dog Month is the perfect time to strengthen that connection and celebrate the joy our dogs bring to our lives. Whether you’re looking for a fun way to spend a weekend or simply want to break up the daily routine, here are some exciting and creative activities you can do with your dog this month.

Let’s jump into some adventures you can try - both indoors and outdoors. From making your own dog treats to setting up an agility course in your backyard, these ideas are simple, enjoyable, and sure to get tails wagging!

DIY Easy Dog Treats

What better way to show love to your furry friend than with some homemade treats? Not only do you have control over the ingredients, but making your own dog treats is also a fun activity that can involve the whole family. A simple recipe I love includes peanut butter (dog-safe!), oats, and pumpkin. Here’s a quick and easy version you can try:

Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup dog-safe peanut butter

• 1/2 cup canned pumpkin

• 2 cups rolled oats (ground)

Instructions:

1. Mix the peanut butter and canned pumpkin in a bowl until smooth.

2. Gradually add the ground oats until the dough is easy to shape.

3. Roll the dough into small balls or use cookie cutters to create fun shapes.

4. Place them on a baking sheet and refrigerate for an hour to firm up.

Voilà! You’ve created a tasty, healthy snack your dog will love. Plus, you can store these treats in the fridge to use throughout National Dog Month.

(If your are unsure about any ingredients of safety for your dogs, consult a veterinarian or canine nutritionist)

Doggy Spa Day at Home

Doggy Spa Day

Who says pampering is just for people? A spa day for your dog can be a relaxing way to bond and help them feel their best. Start with a gentle bath using dog-friendly shampoo, followed by a thorough brushing session. If your dog enjoys a little massage, use long, slow strokes to help them relax after bath time.

You can even extend the spa day by including a paw soak. Fill a shallow basin with warm water and a little bit of dog-friendly soap, then gently massage their paws. It’s a simple way to care for their feet, especially after long walks or outdoor adventures. Finish the spa experience with some snuggles and, of course, a treat!

Puzzle Toys and Brain Games at Home

Puzzle Toys and Brain Games

Mental stimulation is just as important for dogs as physical exercise, and puzzle toys or brain games are a fantastic way to keep their minds sharp. The great part is you don’t need to spend a lot of money on fancy toys—everyday household items can create engaging puzzles for your dog!

Try this simple game: grab a muffin tin and a few tennis balls. Place treats in a few of the muffin cups and cover them with tennis balls. Your dog will need to figure out how to remove the balls to get the treats underneath. It’s a fun challenge that exercises both their brain and body.

Another option is to hide treats in a rolled-up towel. Let your dog sniff out the treats and unroll the towel to find them. You can make this game more challenging by adding a few folds or tucking in the ends of the towel.

These little brain games help dogs build problem-solving skills while offering a fun and rewarding experience. Plus, they’re great indoor activities for those hot days here in Colorado!

Dog Agility Course in Your Backyard or Living Room

Creating a dog agility course doesn’t require any fancy equipment! You can set up an exciting course in your backyard—or even your living room—using everyday items. Here are some simple ideas to get you started:

  • Jumping obstacles: Use broomsticks or mop handles balanced between two chairs to create a jump for your dog.

  • Weaving poles: Place cones, water bottles, or even cushions in a line for your dog to weave through.

  • Tunnels: Drape a blanket over two chairs to form a tunnel, and encourage your dog to crawl through.

Agility courses help build your dog’s confidence, improve coordination, and offer excellent physical exercise. Plus, running the course together can strengthen your bond! Make it a game by timing how fast they complete the course, and reward them with praise or a treat after each round.

This is also a great bonding activity if you have children. Let them help set up the course for your dog, and then have fun doing it together! It’s an engaging way for everyone in the family to participate and enjoy time with the family pup.

Doggy Picnic

Who doesn’t love a picnic? Plan a special doggy-friendly picnic and enjoy some quality time with your furry friend. Pack a blanket, a basket of dog-friendly snacks (like the homemade treats from earlier!), and head to a local park or even your backyard. Humans can pack their own picnic too, making it a fun outing for both you and your dog.

Include a few toys, like a ball or a tug rope, to keep your dog entertained while you relax together. Remember to bring plenty of water for both you and your dog, and choose a shady spot if it’s a hot day. If your dog loves socializing, invite some other dog-pals along for a mini doggy picnic party! It’s a simple yet fun way to enjoy the outdoors together.

Photo Adventure Day

Dogs make the best models for a photoshoot! Whether you’re looking to capture some professional-level shots or just want to have fun with your camera or phone, a photo adventure day is a great way to spend time together and create lasting memories.

Head to a scenic park, a hiking trail, or even just your backyard, and let your dog explore while you snap away. Bring along some treats or a favorite toy to keep their attention and capture some candid shots. If your dog is camera-shy, try incorporating playtime into the shoot to help them relax.

A photo adventure day not only creates keepsakes but also helps reinforce your bond by spending quality time together.

National Dog Month is all about celebrating the special relationship you have with your dog. By incorporating some of these fun activities into your routine, you’ll not only create lasting memories but also keep your dog engaged, active, and happy. From relaxing spa days to exciting puzzle games and agility courses, there are endless ways to enjoy time together.

Make the most of this month by choosing a new adventure with your dog, and don’t forget to capture those special moments along the way!
